DANCE ON THE PATH: BRAZILIAN TANGOS (2018)
The company Danças Polifônicas carries out a deep interdisciplinary research on choreographic and musical creation, starting from the first tango compositions and recordings in Brazil. The investigation has already resulted in the article Raízes do Tango no Brasil and the show Tangos Brasileiros. The latter, freely inspired by the figure of the pianist Chiquinha Gonzaga, circulated in 2017 in interior cities and the capital of São Paulo and was composed of three dancers: Talita Vinagre, Felipe Stocco and Sofia Tsirakis, who signs the direction. At this moment, the creation of Danças Polifônicas, by dancer and director Sofia Tsirakis, leans on a solo.
The show proposes a dialogue between dance, music, visual arts and literature. From the reading of the poem El Tango, by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges about the origins of tango, the dancer's steps lead to a dramatization of the body, transposing genders: from male to female, in the dramatic relationship of two or more characters in only one. The poem is a portrait of the Buenos Aires night and the musical style, linked to the houses of prostitution at the end of the 19th century and the bullies who frequented them.
The track follows the trajectory of tango, compositions by Chiquinha Gonzaga and also transits through the cosmopolitan inventiveness of Astor Piazzolla, until reaching contemporary tangos, with creations by André Balboni. The dance crosses classic tango steps, bringing a dramatic charge to the relationship between lovers, until the female character's total outburst.
The show highlights one of the characteristics of Brazilian music referring to Brazilian tango compositions, it also investigates the paths that dance can reach in the imagination, extrapolating its topological spatiality. The Brazilian Tangos project is approved by the MINC, in the Rouanet Law, to raise funds to circulate the show in various regions of Brazil.
